Choosing the right dance level can feel a little confusing—especially when you’re jumping between styles, teachers, or studios. You might be an absolute powerhouse in one style and feel like a total newbie in another, and that’s totally normal. Each style has its own rhythm, technique, and learning curve, so your experience might shift depending on what you’re taking, where you're taking it, and who you're taking it with!
The good news? Dance levels aren’t a rigid set of rules. They’re more like helpful guideposts. Anyone can try any level—it really depends on how the class is taught and how you like to learn. You might totally crush advanced choreography if it’s broken down clearly and paced at a beginner level. On the flip side, beginner classes can be super rewarding even for experienced dancers, especially if you’re paying attention to the details and pushing your technique.
1. Be Honest With Yourself (In a Nice Way)
If you’re just starting out or coming back after a break, there’s no shame in sticking to beginner or lower levels. Strong technique, clean movement, and confidence all come from the foundations. Nobody is judging you for taking your time.
2. Every Style is Its Own Universe
Just because you’ve been dancing for years doesn’t mean you’ll automatically be in the highest level of every genre. Ballet is not hip hop is not heels is not tap. Let yourself be new again—it’s actually fun if you come at it from a growth mindset.
3. Challenging Doesn’t Always Mean Better
Some dancers thrive when they’re pushed to keep up, others feel better when they can master the material and enjoy the movement. Neither is wrong. You’ll get something valuable from every level—as long as you show up open and ready to work.
4. Ask Questions—We Love That Stuff
Not sure where to start? Talk to us! Our teachers want you in the class where you’ll grow and feel good. We’ll help you find the best fit (and won’t make it weird).
5. You’re Allowed to Switch It Up
Try a level and see how it feels. Too easy? Too hard? You can always switch next time. There’s no shame in adjusting. You’re here to dance, not win a trophy for “Most Appropriately Levelled Human.”
So whether you're testing the waters in a new style or wondering if you're ready to level up, just remember: the goal isn’t to be perfect—it’s to keep learning, keep moving, and keep loving dance. We’ve got room for all of it (and for you) here.
If you ever have questions about where you fit, just ask—we’re always happy to help guide you!
